ABOUT AIXTRON

Sustainability at AIXTRON

Our CSR responsibility as a company

Act responsibly and carefully

We know that social, ecological and economic activities and services influence each other and have noticeable interactions. As a supplier to a pioneering key industry, we conduct our business carefully, responsibly and taking the interests of all stakeholders into account. Our efforts are therefore aimed at a future for our company, our customers and society that is characterized by sustainability. This is reflected in our CSR policy , which sets out guidelines for responsible and sustainable economic activity.

Sustainability is much more than just complying with regulations and rules. It must be an expression of a constant and serious effort to permanently improve our economic, ecological and social aspects. We also want our employees to be motivated to work for a responsible company and to develop products and technologies that can change the world.

The deposition systems from AIXTRON - a global leader in the semiconductor industry - are used to produce high-performance components for electronic and opto -electronic applications based on compound and organic semiconductor materials.

We can have a particular influence on the design and development of our products. Through our future-oriented technologies, but also through the use of Industry 4.0 processes, we contribute to a significant reduction in the energy consumption of our customers' and their customers' products. For example, power components (III-V semiconductors) made of gallium nitride ( GaN ) with a large bandgap, such as those manufactured on our systems, require significantly less energy with the same or higher performance compared to conventional silicon-based power chips.

We also continuously reduce the environmental impact in the manufacturing process and in our building technology by using energy and other natural resources consciously and responsibly.

AIXTRON is committed to climate protection

Protecting the climate plays an important role for AIXTRON. We attach great importance to keeping the ecological footprint that we leave behind through our business activities as small as possible and minimizing the release of climate-damaging CO2-emissions.
AIXTRON stands for energy-efficient technologies worldwide: With our products and solutions, we contribute to greater energy efficiency in numerous key industries and thus take an active role in reducing avoidable greenhouse gas emissions. We have had an ISO 50001-certified energy management system since 2014, which forms the basis for implementing effective energy efficiency measures at AIXTRON.

In order to avoid impact on our climate as much as possible, AIXTRON now sources its electricity entirely from renewable energies and thus makes an important contribution to avoiding greenhouse gas emissions. As part of our company-wide climate efficiency strategy, we offset the remaining and currently unavoidable CO2-emissions, such as those caused by business trips, building heating or commuting ( Scopes 1 and 2 as well as part of the Scope 3 emissions), through certified climate protection projects.

The principle of COemissions reduction projects

Offsetting CO2-emissions is based on the principle of global climate balance: for the climate, it is irrelevant where in the world emissions arise and where they are saved. It is therefore possible to offset unavoidable emissions that arise in one place on earth by taking additional climate protection measures elsewhere.

As part of the Kyoto Protocol, the “Clean Development Mechanism” was created in 2007 under the umbrella of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a uniform procedure for CO2-offsetting that is now recognized worldwide. As a supplement to reducing avoidable greenhouse gas emissions, compensation projects can make an important contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Protection Agreement.

Supporting a climate protection project in India

Climate protection project in India

To offset the resulting CO2-emissions, we support a photovoltaic project in India. This large-scale solar project involves the construction and operation of a 500 MW solar park in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Over the first ten years, the project is estimated to avoid 996,000 tons of CO per year. It therefore replaces 1,051,200 MWh/year of electricity from the energy mix that is mainly based on fossil power plants. Additionally, it helps to diversify the Indian power grid and stabilize supplies.

Trust and security

By using CO2-neutral green electricity, we reduce our climate footprint and by supporting the PV project in India, we compensate for exactly the amount of CO2 that corresponds to the remaining emissions from our other business activities that are currently being determined.

“Trust and security” were particularly important to us when selecting the project. We therefore made sure that the project is certified according to the “ Verified Carbon Standard” and therefore meets demanding and internationally recognized standards. The emissions savings achieved are regularly checked and confirmed by independent experts. In addition to the avoided CO2-emissions, the projects bring other very concrete benefits for people and the local environment, for example by creating jobs and helping to protect valuable ecosystems.
